Ipswich Town have another three points on the board after beating Portsmouth this weekend, and fans think one player is the cause of their success.
It has not been the best start to the season for Ipswich Town, with Kieran McKenna’s side needing five games before they got their first win.
Admittedly, that 5-0 thumping of Sheffield United did showcase the immense potential Ipswich have as promotion contenders this season.
They almost lost to Blackburn Rovers last weekend before the referee called the game off with ten minutes to spare. But, a much stronger performance at Portman Road against Portsmouth this weekend got the Tractor Boys back on track.
Ipswich Town fans rave about Jens Cajuste
It does seem things are starting to click for McKenna’s revamped Ipswich squad now. The Tractor Boys lost key players Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson this summer, but a number of Ipswich Town signings have left the side looking stronger, on paper, at least.
One man, Jens Cajuste, has really been getting tongues wagging among the Ipswich fanbase, with many now claiming he’s one of the best players in the Championship.
Over on Twitter/X, one supporter wrote: “Are we definitely sure we’re allowed to have Jens Cajuste in this division?! It’s not fair on the rest.”
Another replied, “A cut above the rest,” while a third added, “His smart, strong, graceful play was a joy to watch.”
Elsewhere, Ipswich Town fans wrote, “This is what you call a cheat code,” and described Cajuste as a “Rolls Royce of a player.”
The supporters are loving the partnership between Cajuste and fellow new boy, Azor Matusiwa. Their display on Saturday prompted one supporter to post: “We may have the best midfield the Championship has ever seen.”
But, they’re not forgetting that Cajuste has merely rejoined the club on loan this season. “He is still not our player! Get him signed ASAP,” one tweet said.
Ipswich Town can build momentum after Portsmouth win
We had predicted Ipswich Town would get promoted this season. Many neutrals also expected Ipswich to be right up there come the end of the campaign.
It’s taken some time to click, but McKenna does seem to have them on the right track now. But, we’ll have a much better idea of how likely they are to return to the Premier League after the next five games.
A trip to Ashton Gate will not be easy when Ipswich face Bristol City this week, and then they have the much-anticipated East Anglian derby. Given how Norwich players feel about Marcelino Nunez, that should be a heated affair.
Ipswich will then take on league leaders Middlesbrough, before hosting surprise package Charlton Athletic and play-off contenders West Brom. If McKenna can come out of that run of games with, say, 10 points, he’d be pretty happy.
You’d think that that kind of return would have Ipswich right back in the promotion conversation, and they’d have come through a really tough run of fixtures relatively unscathed.
