Gallas Urges Chelsea to Prioritize Defensive Stability Over Palmer Hype

William Gallas, a former Chelsea defender, has questioned the hype surrounding Cole Palmer following his breakthrough 2023–24 season at Stamford Bridge. The Frenchman maintains that the Blues still have serious problems, especially in defense, and feels that expectations have increased too soon.

After moving from Manchester City, Palmer became the focal point of Chelsea’s project. He had a fantastic debut season with 25 goals, which led to high expectations and individual recognition in the form of a PFA Young Player of the Year award. Gallas, a former Blues defender, feels that the response to Palmer’s ascent has gone too far. Speaking about the squad’s current situation, Gallas claimed that the story around the 24-year-old forward has gotten inflated.

Gallas queries Palmer’s standing

The team has struggled to find defensive solidity, giving up goals frequently and failing to build a solid back line despite making large investments in the roster. “When you look at the Chelsea defenders, they’ve let in so many goals,” Gallas said, criticizing the team’s offensive and defensive performance and speculating that Palmer has not kept the same impact that generated the excitement of the first season. Gallas told BetVictor, “The forwards have hardly scored any goals. Cole Palmer is one player who hasn’t done well enough; I don’t want to name him. After one successful season, everyone in England got on the bandwagon and declared him to be the greatest player in the world, but look at him now. Even though he was named the Young Player of the Year two years ago, he is still quite young despite his current fame.”

Gallas calls on Chelsea to pursue John Stones.

“Marcos Senesi is a good defender; he’s had a good season with Bournemouth, and he’s 29 years old, which means he’s had more experience than some of the current Chelsea defenders,” Gallas said, adding that Chelsea should target Stones, who is scheduled to leave City this summer, in order to bolster their defense. “But with a large club, the pressure will be different, and Senesi hasn’t encountered that pressure.”

“John Stones will be a better choice for Chelsea because he understands the strain of playing for a major team and what it’s like to win titles. Stones will also be free to leave Manchester City in the summer. He would organize the back line; thus, Chelsea should try to sign him.”
