West Virginia University (WVU) is on track to unveil a state-of-the-art practice facility for its renowned Mountaineer Marching Band, “The Pride of West Virginia.” Phase 1 of the project, which includes the installation of an artificial turf field with stadium lighting, is scheduled for completion in July 2025, just in time for the band’s fall camp.
Strategic Location and Design
The new facility is situated at the Med Fields on the Health Sciences Campus, offering convenient access via the Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system and ample parking. This location addresses previous concerns related to transportation and safety, ensuring a more accessible and secure environment for the band.
The field, named Don Wilcox Field in honor of a beloved band leader, will provide a dedicated space for rehearsals, replacing the current practice area, which has been a parking lot for decades. The new turf surface will offer a more realistic training environment, closely resembling the conditions at Milan Puskar Stadium.
Looking ahead, the project plans to include additional features such as a climate-controlled storage facility for instruments and uniforms, a covered pavilion to shield against inclement weather, and enhanced sound systems. These upgrades aim to provide a comprehensive and comfortable space for the band to rehearse and store equipment
While the primary use of the facility will be for the Mountaineer Marching Band, the field will also be available for intramural sports and other student activities when not in use by the band. This multi-use approach maximizes the utility of the space and fosters greater community engagement.
Community Support and Funding
The project has garnered significant support from the WVU community, with approximately $1.25 million raised through donations from alumni and community members. The WVU Board of Governors approved an additional $1.6 million to fund the first phase of construction. This collaborative effort underscores the community’s commitment to enhancing the university’s music programs and providing students with top-tier facilities.
As the Mountaineer Marching Band prepares to transition to its new practice home, the facility stands as a testament to WVU’s dedication to supporting its student organizations and fostering a vibrant campus community.
