The Oklahoma Sooners have landed the top quarterback in the transfer portal as John Mateer committed to OU on Wednesday evening.
Mateer follows offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle after a productive year with Washington State.
In 2024, Mateer completed 64.6% of his passes for 3,149 yards and 29 touchdowns. He also ran for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns, leading the nation in total touchdowns.
Washington State averaged 36.8 points per game, good for 11th in the nation in 2024.
He’s a legit dual-threat quarterback that will have great familiarity with Arbuckle’s system. Mateer can bounce off tacklers and make defenders miss in the open field. He’s got a big-time arm that can make throws down the field.
While Washington State’s schedule isn’t nearly as tough as what Oklahoma will face in 2025, he did show that he can play at the Power Four level in wins over Texas Tech and Washington. In the Cougars’ win over the Red Raiders, Mateer ran for 197 yards and one touchdown. The following week against the Huskies, he threw for 245 yards and a score and ran for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
Mateer takes the reigns of a Sooners offense that’s facing a major overhaul after a disappointing season. He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining heading into 2025.
The Sooners now have a veteran quarterback to go along with Michael Hawkins, Steele Wasel, and incoming freshman Jett Niu.
