‘Squad depth is vital’: Derby County boss John Eustace wants more signings before transfer deadline

Derby County manager John Eustace has made it clear that he is eager to strengthen his squad further before the summer transfer window closes. As the Rams prepare for the 2025/26 League One season, Eustace stressed the importance of squad depth in a campaign that will demand consistency, resilience, and tactical flexibility.

Speaking after Derby’s latest pre-season fixture, Eustace addressed growing speculation around potential new arrivals. “Squad depth is vital,” he said. “We’ve got a good core group here, but over a long season, with injuries, suspensions, and fixture congestion, we need to ensure we have enough quality and competition in every position.”

So far, Derby have been active in the market, adding several key players to bolster their ranks. However, Eustace hinted that at least two or three more additions are likely before the deadline, particularly in midfield and attacking areas. “We’re always looking to improve. Recruitment is ongoing, and the club is working hard behind the scenes to bring in the right type of players – lads with the right mentality who can fit into the culture we’re building.”

Eustace’s comments come amid concerns over the squad’s ability to maintain momentum throughout the grueling League One calendar. With promotion ambitions high at Pride Park, especially after narrowly missing out last season, the pressure is on to hit the ground running and sustain form through to May.

The manager also acknowledged the contribution of academy players during pre-season but cautioned against placing too much responsibility on youth. “The young lads have done brilliantly, and some will be part of the squad this season. But we can’t rely solely on them week in, week out. It’s about finding the right balance between experience and youth.”

Derby fans will be hoping the club can deliver a few more signings in key areas, with a central midfielder and an experienced striker believed to be among the top priorities. The transfer window closes at the end of August, and with just weeks remaining, the clock is ticking.

“We’ve got a strong foundation, but we’re not done yet,” Eustace added. “We want to give ourselves the best possible chance this season, and to do that, we need the right depth and quality across the squad.”
