Thomas Tuchel’s announcement of the England national team roster will undoubtedly dominate much of today’s headlines.
As important players like Cole Palmer of Chelsea, Phil Foden of Manchester City, Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool, and several others appear destined to stay at home, it is already receiving a lot of criticism from throughout the nation.
For Chelsea fans, however, there is some more significant news within all of this. Cesar Azpilicueta, a club legend and captain who won the Champions League, has said that this will be his final season and that he will be retiring from the game.
Azpilicueta played for Chelsea for more than ten years. Naturally, that night in 2021, when he led the team to Champions League victory over Man City, was the pinnacle of his career. Tuchel was, incidentally, the winning manager that evening.
Azpilicueta announced his decision to retire from the game at the end of this season in an emotional post on social media. He penned:
Greetings, football
I would like to inform you that this season will be my final one as a professional football player. I think it’s time to begin a new chapter in my life after living my dream for so long.
To be honest, even though I’ve been getting ready for this, writing this letter was difficult for me. Twenty seasons later, a lot of people have contributed significantly to my career.
I had no idea the incredible trip that lay ahead as I kicked a ball with my schoolmates for the first time as a child in Pamplona.
Every moment—the victories, the difficult setbacks, the difficulties, and most importantly, the people I’ve encountered and the connections I’ve formed along the way—is something for which I am thankful.
I want to express my gratitude to all of my teammates, coaches, and staff at every club I’ve had the good fortune to be a part of for supporting my daily personal and athletic development.
It has been an absolute honor to represent my country on the grandest platforms while wearing the uniforms of CA Osasuna, Olympique Marseille, Chelsea FC, Atlético de Madrid, and Sevilla FC. For me, every moment has been extremely meaningful.
Azpilicueta also left a note for the supporters.
Naturally, Azpi, who the Chelsea faithful loved during his amazing tenure at Stamford Bridge, has also left a note for them. He penned:
To the fans: I was motivated to give my all every day by your enthusiasm and encouragement. The good times were enhanced by your belief in me, particularly during difficult times.
I hope you witnessed a player who, with pride and emotion, always gave their all for your colors.
To my family: Your love and support are invaluable to me; you have always stood by my side and encouraged me during difficult times. I wish you a sense of pride. Without you on this journey, none of this would have been possible.
I’ve learned so much from football, including virtues like respect, humility, sacrifice, and collaboration. I’ve had the chance to discover new nations, cultures, and languages because of it.
My heart is full of thankfulness and memories that I will carry with me into the future.
With affection!
After he retires, we can only hope for the best for him in the game and beyond. He is undeniably one of Chelsea Football Club’s greatest players ever. Someone who has shown that with persistence and diligence, you can do anything in the game.
Azpi’s Chelsea voyage
Azpilicueta was one of those names that got lost in the shuffle when he was signed in the summer of 2012 alongside players like Oscar and Eden Hazard. He was not anticipated to have a significant influence.
For many, becoming a squad player was his limit. And initially, it had appeared that he would also become that.
However, he eventually managed to earn a spot on the team. It was under Jose Mourinho that he first became an integral part of the team and undroppable.
And he would never look back after that, whether it was playing as a left back, right back, or as part of a three-man backline. He did it all for Chelsea and captained the club to the highest peak possible.
What a career it was and what a privilege it was to watch a true professional like him week in, week out. Thank you for the memories. Thank you for everything, Dave.
