Derby County have announced the signing of experienced centre-back Danny Batth, with the 34-year-old joining the club on a free transfer. The veteran defender brings a wealth of experience to the Rams’ backline as they prepare for the upcoming Championship season.
Batth, who was most recently at Norwich City, joins John Eustace’s side following the expiration of his contract at Carrow Road. The move represents Derby’s intent to bolster their defensive options with seasoned leadership as they aim to solidify their return to the second tier.
With over 400 career appearances to his name, Batth is no stranger to the Championship. He enjoyed notable spells with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Stoke City, and Sunderland, earning a reputation as a tough, reliable, and vocal presence at the heart of defence. His no-nonsense style, aerial ability, and organisational skills have consistently made him a fan favourite throughout his career.
Speaking to the club’s media team after signing, Batth said:
“It’s a great opportunity to join a club with Derby’s history and ambition. I know what it takes to compete in this league, and I’m here to help the team push on and be as competitive as possible. I’m excited to get started and play my part both on and off the pitch.”
Manager John Eustace welcomed the new arrival, noting the importance of adding experience to the dressing room.
“Danny is a player we’ve admired for a while. He’s a leader, he knows this league inside out, and he’ll be a great influence on the younger players. His professionalism and character will be vital for us during what will be a demanding campaign.”
Batth’s arrival is seen as part of a broader effort by Derby to blend youth with experience as they re-establish themselves in the Championship following promotion. With several young defenders in the squad, Batth’s presence will provide guidance, depth, and competition for places.
Derby County fans will be hoping the veteran defender can bring both steel and stability to the backline. If his previous stints are any indication, Batth’s leadership and commitment will be a valuable asset as the Rams look to build momentum and make a strong impression in the Championship.
Batth is expected to link up with the squad immediately as pre-season preparations continue ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
