Ipswich and Blackburn submit cases after abandoned game… here’s who makes the call

Ipswich Town and Blackburn Rovers are understood to have both submitted their cases to the EFL regarding what they feel should happen next following Saturday’s abandoned game at Ewood Park.

The Blues were down to 10 men and trailed 1-0 when the match was brought to a halt in the 80th minute due to a waterlogged pitch.

An EFL statement read: “The decision was taken in agreement with both managers. The Board will now consider what action is to be taken as a result of the abandonment, in line with EFL Regulations.”

EFL regulation 34.2 states: “Any League match which from any cause falls whatever short of 90 minutes’ duration may be ordered to count as a completed fixture or be replayed in full, or in part, on whatever term and conditions the Board shall in their absolute discretion determine.”

Blackburn will argue that the result should stand given the game state and amount of time played, while Ipswich will argue that a replay is fairest given the action could have been stopped earlier and that there would have been plenty of stoppage-time to come.

The two teams being ordered to play out the final 10 minutes plus stoppage-time is also a possibility.

The EFL Board consists of 10 directors, six of whom are divisional representatives elected by member clubs. They are Rick Parry (chair), Trevor Birch (chief exec), Peter Risdale (Preston), Neil Bausor (Middlesbrough), Zoe Webber (Norwich), Liam Scully (Lincoln), Julian Tagg (Exeter), Charles Grant (Crewe), Caroline Artis and Justine Roberts (non executive directors).

It’s understood that no timescale has been placed on making a decision.
