Kenzo Goudmijn’s departure from Derby County appears settled after the midfielder was named in Go Ahead Eagles’ UEFA Europa League squad.
The 23-year-old Dutchman has been linked with a return to the Netherlands for much of the summer, and although no official announcement has yet been made by either club, his inclusion in the European competition’s squad list confirms the move went through before Tuesday’s Dutch deadline.
Loan Move Clarified
Derby supporters were left uncertain earlier this week when reports emerged of Goudmijn’s loan switch but neither side confirmed the deal. With paperwork completed late in the window, the player has now been registered for European action, ending any confusion surrounding his future.
Signed from AZ Alkmaar in 2024, Goudmijn arrived at Pride Park with high expectations but struggled to impose himself in the Championship. Hopes that a tactical reshuffle this season might unlock his potential never materialised, and the midfielder found himself on the periphery during the opening weeks of the campaign.
Derby manager John Eustace sanctioned the exit as part of a wider trimming of his squad, which also saw Ben Osborn move to Stockport County and Jake Rooney head to Barnsley. The Rams were keen to ease congestion in midfield after a busy summer of recruitment.
UEFA’s confirmation means Goudmijn is eligible for Go Ahead Eagles’ group-stage fixtures, with the Eredivisie side preparing to balance domestic commitments with a European campaign. Eustace now faces the task of finalising his 25-man squad, with the Rams still one player over the limit. Centre-back Curtis Nelson, sidelined with a long-term injury, is the most likely candidate to miss out. Norwegian defender Sondre Langas is expected to take a slot, having impressed since his arrival and offering more immediate options at the heart of defence.
