Derby County returned to winning ways in pre-season on Tuesday evening, as they ran out 4-2 victors away to Solihull Moors.
It was the National League side who took the lead in the West Midlands inside the first 15 minutes thanks to a stunning volley from Sam Creany before Ebou Adams equalised for the Rams.
Cameron Green restored the home side’s lead with another excellent finish, with Danny Batth ensuring that the teams were level at half-time. Just after the break, Corey Blackett-Taylor, who has been excellent in pre-season, put John Eustace’s team in front for the first time from the penalty spot.
However, it was the fourth and final goal for Derby that will really be of interest to supporters, as Charles Ebuka Agbawodikeizu secured the victory. The East Midlands outfit have plenty of young stars, but the teenager may just be the best of the lot.
Charles Ebuka Agbawodikeizu is going to be a huge player for Derby County
At just 17, the striker is starting to show real promise after spending time working with the first team at the end of last season under Eustace.
Injuries saw Agbawodikeizu make the bench on four different occasions under Eustace, although he did not feature on the pitch. Nevertheless, he had a very fruitful season in the U18s, scoring 15 goals in 14 appearances in the U18 Premier League.
Derby are struggling with injuries in their forward line at the moment, with Patrick Agyemang dealing with a hernia issue while Eustace must not forget about Lars-Jorgen Salvesen, who had knee surgery earlier in the year.
Yet, their teenage superstar is quickly establishing himself as a genuine understudy to Carlton Morris, who started for the Rams for the first time on Tuesday.
Charles Ebuka Agbawodikeizu should be in the squad for Stoke City away
After impressing against Walsall last week before his stunning solo goal against Solihull on Tuesday, there is no doubt that Agbawodikeizu should be in the squad for when Derby play their first Championship fixture of the season next Saturday.
The Rams travel to Stoke City, the reverse of the final game of the last campaign when Eustace was praised by Adams for keeping the club in the Championship.
Morris’ fitness levels are down after missing the start of pre-season with a knock, and Derby’s 17-year-old starlet may find himself handed his senior debut against the Potters if he is required.
A goal in the first few weeks will only help him as he looks to become the number nine at Pride Park in the years to come.
