Derby County given green light to seal deal by Mauricio Pochettino as Rams agree deal for US forward

Derby County look set to make a blockbuster signing this summer as they close in on a USA international.

Following Derby County’s survival in the 2024/25 Championship season, with John Eustace steadying the ship after Paul Warne’s dismissal, there will be hope that the club can build on that in the upcoming campaign with new arrivals.

The Rams have already brought in Carlton Morris from Luton Town, a shrewd bit of business by Eustace, who has managed to bring in proven Championship experience from a recently-relegated Hatters side.

Aside from Jerry Yates, Derby occasionally struggled in the forward line last season, so bringing in strikers is understandably a priority for the former Blackburn Rovers boss, as seen by the fact that he is not stopping with Carlton Morris’ signing.

Derby County have made progress with another top option, and now look set to bring in a striker for a significant fee.

Derby County reach an agreement over the signing of Patrick Agyemang

In recent weeks, Derby County had shown interest in USA striker Patrick Agyemang, but faced competition from other Championship sides for the 24-year-old.

However, as reported by Tom Bogert on X, Derby County look set to win that battle with the Charlotte FC forward set to join the Rams for a deal in the region of $8million, with $2million bonuses – an amount that adds up to over £7million.

Agyemang has plenty of prestige at such a young age, with the 2000-born man already notching nine caps for the USA and bagging five goals.

His career has seen him play exclusively in the MLS, where he has notched 17 goals in 59 appearances.

Rams have been given the seal of approval by Mauricio Pochettino

The main thing that stands out about Agyemang’s career so far is his progress to becoming one of the key men in the USMNT. After notching his debut in January 2025, US boss and former Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton man Mauricio Pochettino has been a big fan of the forward, which will fill Derby County fans with hope.

When speaking to Goal, Agyemang spoke about his relationship with Pochettino and the support that the Argentine had given him.

“He encourages us to play our game,” said Agyemang. “He said to me, ‘I brought you here to play you, to be you, to express yourself. Do the right things defensively and work hard and put the pressure on, but play, have fun, enjoy yourself and show what you can do’.”

Hopefully, the goalscoring record that Agyemang has notched across the pond will translate into Championship football – if so, Derby County will have a brilliant forward on their hands.
