Derby County target transfer for player John Eustace referred ‘one of the best’

Derby County have been linked with another raid on Blackburn Rovers, this time for defender Callum Brittain.

The right-back is approaching the last year of his contract at Ewood Park and is yet to sign a new deal with the Championship club.

That has put him potentially in the shop window and according to journalist Pete O’Rourke he is now attracting the attention of Derby.

Brittain was a regular fixture under Eustace at Ewood Park last season with the defender making 35 appearances in all competitions.

He scored twice in wins over Portsmouth and Millwall as Rovers just missed out on the top six.

Speaking about Brittain after his goal against Pompey, then Rovers boss Eustace said: “He’s getting better and better and is really maturing into a top full-back in the league.

“He’s doing a lot of work on his defensive role and full credit has to go to the staff who have been working with him on that and helping mature him into one of the best full-backs in the league.

“I think he’s improving week by week and he’s growing into one of the top performers in the league.

“We’re very fortunate to have him here and he’s a huge part of how we want to play.

“He’s got great quality, he’s getting better and better defensively and he has a fantastic attitude as well, the 45-year-old added.

“We want to develop and produce top players here at the football club and you can see it coming out with him now every day on the training field.

“He’s disappointed with his numbers over last season, but his numbers are getting better and better now and I hope he’s going to create and score more by the end of the season.

“Cal’s a top lad and a very good player.”

Derby currently have options at right-back in Kane Wilson and Ryan Nyambe, although the latter will not be fit for the start of the season as he recovers from injury.

Brittain is not the first Blackburn player to have been targeted by Eustace with the club this week confirming the arrivals of attacker Andi Weimann and defender Danny Batth.

Both players turned down the chance of staying at Ewood Park in favour of a move to Derby with the veteran duo each penning one year contracts.

Derby have also been linked with Rovers captain Lewis Travis who, like Brittain, is approaching the last year of his current deal.

He has been linked with a £2m exit from Rovers although there are other clubs in the Championship said to be interested in the midfielder.
