‘We try to have a hard edge’: West Virginia college football’s new head coach bans players from ‘dancing on TikTok’, due to… Read More

West Virginia University football head coach Rich Rodriguez has implemented a new policy banning his players from posting dance videos on TikTok. While players are still permitted to use the platform, Rodriguez emphasizes that dancing does not align with the “hard edge” image he seeks to cultivate within the team. He believes such content detracts from the team’s focus and unity.

Rodriguez, who returned to WVU for a second tenure after a successful first stint from 2001 to 2007, is committed to rebuilding the Mountaineers’ program following a 6–7 season. He aims to prioritize team cohesion over individual expression, viewing football as a collective endeavor rather than a platform for personal branding.

The policy has sparked discussions about the balance between personal expression and team discipline in the age of social media. While some support the move as a step toward restoring traditional team values, others question its relevance in a modern, digitally connected world. Rodriguez remains steadfast, stating, “I hope our focus can be on winning football games. How about let’s win the football game and not worry about winning the TikTok.”

As the Mountaineers prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on how this policy influences team dynamics and performance on the field.
