In a momentous recognition that cements his legacy in college football history, Archie Griffin, the legendary running back from Ohio State University, has been named the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) by ESPN. The announcement came after an extensive, months-long fan poll and expert panel deliberation, where Griffin edged out other gridiron greats, including Herschel Walker (Georgia), Tim Tebow (Florida), and Earl Campbell (Texas).

Griffin, the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner (1974, 1975), is widely regarded as one of the most consistent and dominant players in the sport’s history. During his storied career at Ohio State from 1972 to 1975, he rushed for 5,589 yards and led the Buckeyes to four Big Ten titles and four Rose Bowl appearances under legendary coach Woody Hayes.

Unmatched Legacy

“Archie Griffin represents everything that’s great about college football,” said ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, a fellow Buckeye. “His performance on the field was unmatched, and his humility and leadership off the field made him a true ambassador for the sport.”

The ESPN GOAT competition, launched earlier this year, featured a 64-player bracket voted on by fans and evaluated by a panel of former players, coaches, and sports historians. Griffin steadily advanced through rounds stacked with talent, including Bo Jackson, Barry Sanders, Vince Young, and others before facing off in a final round against three of the most iconic figures in college football: Walker, Tebow, and Campbell.

Reaction from the Football World

Upon hearing the news, Griffin, now 70, responded with characteristic grace and modesty.

“I’m honored and humbled by this recognition,” he said in a statement. “I played with some incredible teammates and had the support of a great coaching staff. This award belongs to all of us who wore the Scarlet and Gray.”

Former Georgia running back Herschel Walker, who was considered a strong contender, congratulated Griffin via social media, writing, “No one did it better, Archie. A true legend and a deserving GOAT.”

Tim Tebow, known for his leadership and dual-threat ability at Florida, also acknowledged Griffin’s legacy. “What Archie did during his time at Ohio State has never been repeated. That says it all.”

Beyond the Numbers

Griffin’s greatness goes beyond stats. Known for his sportsmanship, durability, and leadership, he started in 40 consecutive games and rushed for over 100 yards in 31 straight contests — a feat unmatched to this day. Even after college, Griffin continued to impact the sport and community, serving as a role model, motivational speaker, and executive at the Ohio State Alumni Association.

A Moment for Buckeye Nation

For Ohio State fans, this accolade is another source of pride in a program known for producing elite talent.

“Archie is not only a Buckeye legend — he’s a national treasure,” said Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. “This recognition is long overdue.”

As college football continues to evolve, Archie Griffin’s legacy endures — not just as a player who won accolades, but as a symbol of excellence, class, and the enduring spirit of the game.
