With a mysterious single-digit jersey tease, one Nebraska football wide receiver might be aiming for a leadership position.
Fans of Nebraska football are getting small previews of what could be a fantastic 2025 season, even if the season is officially in that seemingly endless phase. Jacory Barney, who at least suggested he’s prepared to take the lead for the Huskers both on and off the field, has the most recent information.
The indication was given at the same moment that Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule was discreetly shaking his head, suggesting that Demitrius Bell, a weapon that may have been overlooked, was about to take a significant hit.
Jacory Barney’s potential single-digit jersey change suggests a leadership jump.
This time, the clue was revealed earlier in the week when Barney shared a photo of himself on Instagram Stories wearing a Nebraska football shirt with the number two on it. The photo appears noteworthy given that Barney has worn No. 17 ever since he got to Lincoln. He added the eyeballs emoji to the caption “deuce”.
If the image is a clue, it goes beyond just stating that he is changing his phone number. Only specific players are permitted to wear single-digit numbers, a practice that Matt Rhule established when he took over the team.
According to Rhule, team leaders are those who wear single-digits. Captains make up the majority. However, that is not necessary.
It’s also important to note that no player currently wearing the No. 2 jersey is on the roster. DeShon Singleton (8), Malcolm Hartzog (7), Vincent Shavers (1), and Marques Buford (3) are the four players with single-digit jersey numbers heading into 2025.
Usually, autumn practice is when the players who receive these numbers are revealed. So, we probably won’t know for sure until Nebraska football reassembles as a team at the end of July or the beginning of August, whether Jacory Barney was implying something or simply outlining his objectives.
