Prior to Saturday night’s home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, who had lost 2-2 in their previous four games, the Edmonton Oilers had won three of their previous four games at Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton.

However, the Oilers were defeated by the Maple Leafs’ quick start and were unable to record four victories in five games. Toronto won 4-3 after jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first period.

The Oilers are at 32-16-4, while the Maple Leafs climbed to 31-19-2.

The Oilers had a rough first twenty minutes, falling behind 3-0 in just over six minutes of play due to goals from Bobby McMann, Matthew Knies, and William Nylander. During the first interval, the Leafs took their 3-0 advantage into the dressing room.

The Oilers began to rally when defenseman Evan Bouchard gave Edmonton the lead halfway through the second period, but Mitch Marner gave the Oilers a three-goal lead again early in the third.

With goals from Corey Perry and Zach Hyman in the third period, the Oilers weren’t going away quietly. They tried to level the score late in the frame by pulling goalie Stuart Skinner for a sixth attacker, but their attempt was eventually unsuccessful.

With 45 saves, Joseph Woll was a good player for the Leafs, but Skinner only made 24 stops on 28 shots.

In Thursday’s shootout loss to the Red Wings, Skinner largely held his own, making numerous crucial saves and giving up just two goals in the second period. He contributed to his team’s point gain in the standings.

This season, his performances have fluctuated, and although he contributed offensively, he failed to deliver on defense.

3. Klingberg, John

Klingberg, who was just playing in his second game with his new squad this season, gave up the game-tying goal late in regulation after making an unintentional offside mistake.

His little premature entry into the attacking area negated Leon Draisaitl’s attempted tying goal 17 seconds later.
