Lee Hendrie believes the Championship should have VAR amid increasing calls for it to be introduced in the second tier.
The technology has yet to be used in the Championship, but it is believed that it has been a subject for discussion at the EFL.
While the Premier League has the ultimate VAR package, it is likely that the Championship would have a slimmed-down version should it ever be given the green light.
Derby County have already been on the end of a bad decision this season when Wrexham’s Lewis O’Brien should have been sent off for a tackle on Ebou Adams but received just a yellow.
Had that been in the Premier League, the decision would have likely been overturned.
Traditionalists are against its use because of the delays it can bring to matches, but Hendrie believes it’s such an important league that it should be implemented.
“I think you look at the Premier League and the Championship and the Championship is just as important for me,” the ex-Aston Villa midfielder told Football League World.
“I think the reason why they should have VAR (in the Championship) is because we know how much it means for football clubs to get promoted to the Premier League – not just as a football club, but because of the finances that come with it.”
“I think, eventually, they will have VAR. I don’t see how they can’t,” Hendrie claimed. “It’s one of the most striving leagues around at the moment when you compare it to top, top divisions. I think it will be a matter of time.
“Obviously, cost-wise, it’s an awful lot to fund. But, I think if you’ve got it in the Premier League, you should have it in the Championship.”
