‘Impossible to finish’ – Ipswich boss McKenna’s verdict on abandonment

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna felt it was an “inevitable decision” to call off the game against Rovers.

The pitch deteriorated in the second half and the players were taken off after 80 minutes of play as the ball began to hold up significantly.

The officials headed back out to do some tests but the ball was not bouncing or rolling much on the surface, which had been soaked for a number of hours.

Eventually, the decision was made to abandon the game and a decision over what happens next will be made by the EFL “in due course”.

“A strange sort of feeling as we stand here now. It was impossible to finish the game,” McKenna told the club.

“Especially from the start of the second half, the pitch was getting to the point of unplayable really.

“It was really slushy before the game started but the ball rolled OK in the first half, it was holding up a little bit. But from the second half, it was too slippery to be safe and then the ball stops moving.

“I think it was an inevitable decision. It could have maybe been earlier but in the end there was no other option.”

Nearly four thousand Ipswich fans made the long trip North. “Incredible support, really grateful,” McKenna continued.

“Still in full voice at the end as well! We hope to reward them starting next Saturday and the matches to come.

“Every chance we will be back up here again and hopefully we will reward them because we appreciate the support.”

Ipswich were battling to get back level when the play was stopped. The Tractor Boys had gone down to 10 men when Jacob Greaves was shown a straight red card for a foul on Yuki Ohashi, who was racing towards goal.
