Derby County’s next task clear as player could still leave amid pending deadline

Now that the transfer deadline has passed, Derby County’s next task is to submit their squad list to the Football League.

A maximum of 25 players can be registered, but there is a period of grace before they have to finalise it with the EFL.

Derby currently have 28 players on their books after a busy summer that led to 13 new additions while 12 players have left.

Ben Osborn and Jake Rooney became the latest players to seal moves away from Pride Park yesterday when they signed season-long loans with Stockport and Barnsley respectively.

Their exits followed that of Kane Wilson, who was reunited with Paul Warne on Sunday when he signed a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

But there is still the potential for another departure given Kenzo Goudmijn has interest from back home in the Netherlands.

Their transfer window does not shut until tonight, meaning there is ample opportunity to seal his exit after falling down the pecking order.

If he departs, Derby would have 27 players, which could be further reduced by making the same move they took with the goalkeepers last season.

Rohan Luthra was not registered last season and that is likely to be the same case with Richard O’Donnell who arrived from Blackpool in the summer.

O’Donnell would only need to be registered if there is a goalkeeping crisis. The rules would allow him to be to take the place of Josh Vickers or Jacob Widell Zetterstrom should either sustain an injury.

That would bring the squad number down to 26 and then it would be left to John Eustace to make a decision on who will not make the cut until January when the squad lists have to be submitted again after the winter window.
