‘Hopefully’ – John Eustace shares injury update regarding Derby County man ahead of Ipswich Town trip

Derby County boss John Eustace has said Callum Elder will ‘hopefully’ be fit for this weekend.

Derby County are back in Championship action with an away trip to Ipswich Town. DCFC lost 2-1 against Burnley at Turf Moor in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

Elder, 30, was taken off by the Rams at half-time against the Clarets and they didn’t want to take any risks with him. He has been on the books at Pride Park since 2023.

In this latest update regarding his condition, Eustace has said, as per a report by DerbyshireLive: “He’s a little bit tight, so it’s precautionary. Hopefully, it is nothing to worry about. I’m sure he’ll be fine.”

After joining Derby County two years ago, he said at the time: “It’s a proud day for me and my family, to be recognised by the manager (ex-boss Paul Warne) and his staff as a player that he feels can help promote this club and progress it forward is a real honour. I am proud to be part of it. I have got to thank the manager, he has shown a real keen interest in me since the season finished and my contract finished at Hull.”

Derby County latest regarding Callum Elder

Derby County have a decision to make regarding Elder’s long-term future. His contract at DCFC expires in June next year and he is due to become a free agent as things stand.

The Australia international, who has one cap to his name, helped the Rams win promotion from League One in his first year under former manager Paul Warne, who is now at MK Dons. He then played a key role behind their survival in the second tier in the last campaign.

Elder moved over to England as a youngster back in 2011. He has since had spells at Leicester City, Mansfield Town, Peterborough United, Barnsley, Wigan Athletic, Ipswich Town and Hull City.

What now for Callum Elder and Derby County?

Derby County will make checks on Elder over the coming days. DCFC won’t want to take any risks with him against Ipswich Town to avoid making anything worse.

The full-back is a useful player to have available. He is experienced and knows the level well so it would be a blow if he wasn’t fit enough to play against the Tractor Boys.

Eustace has the chance to bring in some more new signings before the end of the window. The Rams also have the opportunity to let some more individuals head out the exit door as well if needed. The deadline is on Monday 1st September.
