Ipswich Town are making a late push to land Ivan Azon from Italian side Como, and an unlikely assist may have come via one of European football’s most recognisable names: Alvaro Morata.
While Morata is not expected to make a dramatic switch to the Championship, his arrival at Como is clearing the path for Azon to leave the club on loan. The 22-year-old, who joined Como from Real Zaragoza in January, has failed to make a single Serie A appearance since the move, despite showing promise with seven goals in 15 starts during the first half of last season.
The Spanish international is now believed to be surplus to requirements at the Cesc Fabregas-led side, who are on the verge of signing Morata from AC Milan. With game time looking limited, Como are prepared to loan Azon out — and Ipswich are moving quickly to beat competition from La Liga outfit Valencia.
Who is Ivan Azon?
Azón came through the youth ranks at Real Zaragoza after early spells at Amistad and a loan at El Olivar. He made his senior debut in 2020 and went on to make 144 appearances for Zaragoza, scoring 25 goals. Known for his physical presence and work rate, Azón developed into a key figure at the club, contributing regularly in the Segunda División and Copa del Rey.
His first professional goal came in a 2020 Copa del Rey tie against Gimnástica de Torrelavega, followed shortly by his first league goal against Cartagena. In February 2025, he made a step up to Italy, signing with Como. At the international level, Azón has represented Spain at U21 level, earning three caps between 2021 and 2023.
Akpom Medical Set as McKenna Eyes Forward Duo
It remains to be seen whether Ipswich intend to sign both Azon and former Middlesbrough forward Chuba Akpom, who is reportedly undergoing a medical in East Anglia this week. Akpom, who won the Eredivisie Golden Boot with Ajax in 2023/24, had also been targeted by Friday’s opponents Birmingham City.
Should the deal go through in time, Akpom could make his debut at St Andrew’s in a match already filled with promotion intrigue.
Elsewhere, Ipswich continue to strengthen ahead of their Championship return. A deal has been agreed with Napoli to sign Swedish international Jens Cajuste on an initial loan, with an £8.2 million option to buy. That move comes after efforts to land Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough fell through.
