3 Key Insights from the Colts’ Fifth Training Camp Practice

Here are three takeaways from the Colts’ fifth training camp practice on Monday.

The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up their fifth training camp practice on Monday, which was the first practice that the team had in pads.

With help from those who were in attendance, here are three takeaways from what took place on Monday.

A strong showing for Colts’ Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones

Nate Atkins of the Indy Star would post that Monday was the best day for the quarterbacks “by far.”

Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan would post in his camp takeaways article that Richardson was 6-for-6 in the team portion of practice. Jones, meanwhile, was 4-for-5 passing.

Bowen adds that he doesn’t give either quarterback an advantage over the other at this time. But nonetheless, it’s nice to see both Richardson and Jones finding their groove as we get further into camp.

DJ Giddens making a push for RB2?

The backup running back role behind Jonathan Taylor is up for grabs, and with the pads on, Giddens put together an impressive day.

Joel Erickson of the Indy Star noted a big running play from Giddens. In the live period, there wasn’t a ton of room for Giddens to run, but he has an impressive ability to find and create space when given the opportunity.

During his final season at Kansas State, those abilities were on display with Giddens averaging over 6.0 yards per carry, while ranking among the best in missed tackles forced, according to PFF.

Erickson also added that Giddens has looked like a “natural” receiver–an element the Colts could use more of out of the backfield this season.

A couple of standouts in one-on-ones

With the pads on, we saw one-on-ones with two particular standouts. The first was wide receiver AD Mitchell, who, up to this point, has had a shaky start in training camp, dealing with multiple drops.

However, on Monday, Mitchell beat Charvarius Ward on consecutive routes, wrote Jake Arthur of Horseshoe Huddle. Mitchell’s route running has never been in question, but more consistency is needed.

The other standout performer, according to Arthur, was cornerback Jaylon Jones, who won all four of his one-on-one reps. Jones is competing with Justin Walley and JuJu Brents for the starting job opposite of Ward.
