After a hard-fought game that ended in a disappointing loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora didn’t mince words about his team’s performance and the challenges they are facing.
“It’s frustrating, no doubt,” Cora said in the postgame press conference. “We put in the effort, but it just didn’t come together tonight. Baseball is a tough game, and sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way.”
The Red Sox battled fiercely, but key moments slipped through their fingers. Cora was particularly vocal about missed opportunities at the plate and defensive lapses that cost them critical runs. “We had chances to push some runs across, and those didn’t materialize,” he lamented. “You can’t win games if you don’t take advantage of your opportunities, and that’s on all of us — the hitters, the pitchers, and the defense.”
Boston’s pitching staff showed moments of promise but also struggled to keep the Phillies’ offense at bay. Cora acknowledged the efforts of his pitchers but emphasized the need for greater consistency. “Our guys are working hard, but we have to find a way to get through innings cleanly, especially in tight games like this,” he explained. “When you give up big innings or leave runners stranded, it just piles up.”
Despite the frustration, Cora maintained a sense of resolve. “We’re not where we want to be right now, but this is a long season. We have to learn from this and move forward,” he said. “Every loss is a chance to get better, and that’s what we have to focus on.”
Cora also stressed the importance of maintaining team morale as the season progresses. “It’s easy to get down after a tough loss, but we have a good group of guys who know what it takes. We’ll keep fighting and keep working.”
As the Red Sox prepare for their next series, Cora’s message is clear: the team must tighten up both offensively and defensively if they hope to compete consistently in a tough division.
“We’ll review the film, make adjustments, and come back ready to play,” Cora concluded. “This team has a lot of talent, and I believe we’ll get where we want to be.”
