Boston Red Sox have needs in the starting rotation and at first base. While Abraham Toro and Romy González have kept first base from being a disaster, Craig Breslow announced that he is not ruling out adding a first baseman.
“We’ll be open-minded about the opportunities to bring in a bat that can play first base,” Breslow said per MassLive’s Lauren Campbell.
The Red Sox entered the season with high expectations for Triston Casas. He struggled to start the year and then suffered a season-ending injury. Even though Toro and Gonzalez have helped get the Red Sox back on track, the team could be open to adding a bigger bat to the lineup.
It may not be easy to find a first baseman at the trade deadline, however. The number of teams that will be selling could be low, and the teams that are sure to sell do not necessarily have upgrades for the Red Sox at first base. However, Breslow is not ruling out adding a first baseman.
Rhys Hoskins of the Milwaukee Brewers could be a name to watch for the Red Sox. He is currently on the injured list, and Andrew Vaughn has looked great playing in his place. Hoskins has a mutual option next year, and the Brewers could be fine with moving him if they trust Vaughn.
