Derby County boss John Eustace holds promising talks with former Everton player amid transfer interest

Derby County head coach John Eustace has praised the impact of young Everton loanee Harrison Armstrong, as the club considers extending their ties amid wider transfer interest.

Eustace, appointed in mid-February 2025 from Blackburn Rovers, immediately signalled his ambition to strengthen Derby’s squad and build sustainably . Among his various conversations, Eustace singled out Armstrong — a promising talent currently on a temporary move from Everton — as a player who “has impressed” under his guidance .

Armstrong, 18, initially made a handful of appearances for Everton before joining Derby on loan in early February 2025, a move orchestrated by David Moyes to gain first-team exposure . Since then, he’s featured prominently, earning plaudits for his composed performances, most notably against Blackburn Rovers, where he “turned in a Player of the Match performance” .

Eustace was effusive in his praise, stating:

“Harrison was outstanding for his second start in the Championship at age 18. I thought it was a real mature performance … a player of the match performance,”

He added that Armstrong took constructive feedback “on board” and demonstrated a professional mentality well beyond his years — something Derby are keen to nurture as they battle in the Championship .

Armstrong’s influence in midfield has not gone unnoticed. Derby fans have frequently lauded his composure and tempo control, with many believing he could become a key figure in stabilising the Rams’ season.

From Everton’s perspective, this development is welcome. Young talents like Armstrong need Championship minutes to mature — and under Eustace’s stewardship, he is thriving. As Eustace told Ramsey TV, Armstrong’s emergence was just one highlight among “a few things that we need to improve on with him,” demonstrating the coach’s tailored approach to player development.

With Derby still embroiled in relegation struggles — sitting perilously close to the drop before Eustace’s arrival — the loan market and free-agent signings are being actively explored . Armstrong, though on loan, embodies the youthful spark Eustace wants to build around, blending promise with immediate impact.

Looking ahead, questions remain. Could Derby attempt to turn Armstrong’s loan into a permanent move? Would Everton consider an extended stint? While no agreements have been reported, the dialogue is active — and Eustace is clearly invested in making Armstrong a central figure in the remainder of the campaign.
