Derby County closing on shocking transfer raid for Sheffield Wednesday star

Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan is at the center of transfer speculation as his contract approaches its expiration on June 30, 2025.  The 35-year-old midfielder, who has been a stalwart for the Owls since 2015, is reportedly attracting interest from several clubs, including Derby County, Wrexham, and Coventry City.

Bannan’s potential departure from Hillsborough is influenced by ongoing financial challenges at Sheffield Wednesday.  The club is currently under a transfer embargo imposed by the English Football League (EFL) due to repeated failures to pay staff and players’ wages on time.  This embargo restricts the club from paying transfer or loan fees until January 2027, complicating their ability to retain or sign players.

Despite these challenges, Sheffield Wednesday has offered Bannan a new contract to extend his decade-long tenure at the club.  However, the uncertainty surrounding the club’s financial stability and management, including tensions between owner Dejphon Chansiri and manager Danny Rohl, may prompt Bannan to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Wrexham, newly promoted to the Championship and co-owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, is closely monitoring Bannan’s situation.  The club is reportedly prepared to offer competitive terms to secure his services, viewing him as a valuable addition to their squad as they aim to establish themselves in the second tier of English football.

For Derby County, the potential acquisition of Bannan would be a strategic move to bolster their midfield options.  Although Bannan’s previous stint at Derby in 2009 was brief, his extensive experience in the Championship could provide the Rams with the leadership and creativity needed to strengthen their squad.

As the transfer window progresses, Bannan’s next move remains uncertain.  His decision will likely hinge on the evolving situations at Sheffield Wednesday and the offers presented by interested clubs.  For now, all eyes are on the veteran midfielder as he contemplates his future in English football.
