“I’m Really Excited” – Ex-Town Defender Lands Birmingham City Coaching Role

Former Ipswich Town defender Mark Kennedy has been appointed to the coaching staff at Birmingham City, in a move that marks a significant step forward in his coaching career. The 48-year-old expressed his delight at joining the Championship club, calling the opportunity “exciting” and a “real privilege.”

Kennedy, who made over 600 appearances in a playing career that spanned more than two decades, has steadily built his coaching credentials since hanging up his boots in 2012. Best remembered by Town fans for his spell at Portman Road between 2010 and 2012, Kennedy transitioned quickly into coaching, with previous roles including time in the academies at Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers, as well as managerial stints with Macclesfield Town and Lincoln City.

Speaking following his appointment, Kennedy said: “I’m really excited to be joining Birmingham City. It’s a huge club with a proud history and massive potential. I’ve been watching the team’s progress closely and I’m looking forward to working with the players and helping to build something special here.”

Birmingham City, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, have undergone significant changes both on and off the pitch. With Garry Monk returning in a senior footballing role, the club is looking to rebuild its identity and push toward the top half of the Championship table. Kennedy is expected to play a key part in the club’s technical staff, focusing on player development and tactical implementation.

Club officials have welcomed Kennedy’s arrival, praising his tactical knowledge and ability to work with younger players. Technical Director Craig Gardner said: “Mark brings a wealth of experience and a fresh energy that we think will complement our current setup perfectly. His background in both first-team and academy coaching makes him a valuable asset as we reshape the squad.”

Fans of Ipswich Town and his other former clubs have taken to social media to wish him well, with many expressing their support for the popular ex-defender’s continued rise in the coaching ranks.

As Birmingham gear up for pre-season training, all eyes will be on how Kennedy helps influence a squad eager to bounce back. For the man himself, it’s another chapter in a football journey that shows no signs of slowing down.
