Ohio State’s spring practices have wrapped, and one of the biggest storylines emerging from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center isn’t just about player development or positional battles — it’s about the impact of a new face on the coaching staff. Former NFL head coach and longtime defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has drawn glowing praise from Buckeye players, signaling a strong start to his tenure in Columbus.
Patricia, hired earlier this year as a senior defensive analyst, has made an immediate impression. Known for his complex schemes and deep NFL pedigree, the former New England Patriots defensive coordinator has shifted perceptions with his ability to connect personally with players, teach with clarity, and instill a renewed energy into the defensive side of the ball.
“He’s a genius, but he keeps it real,” said junior linebacker C.J. Hicks. “It’s not just about the Xs and Os — it’s how he breaks things down and makes it all click for us.”
Patricia, often perceived in NFL circles as a cerebral and at times intense figure, has seemingly flipped the script at Ohio State. Players have emphasized not just his football acumen but his approachability and investment in their growth, both on and off the field.
“Coach Patricia really shows he cares,” defensive back Denzel Burke added. “He’s always checking in with us — making sure we’re good mentally, not just in football. That means a lot.”
His influence is already visible in the Buckeyes’ defensive installs this spring. Sources inside the program describe his contributions as “innovative but practical,” with a focus on versatility, communication, and disguising coverages — all hallmarks of his NFL defenses.
Head coach Ryan Day praised Patricia’s integration into the staff, calling it a “seamless fit.”
“Matt brings a wealth of knowledge, and he’s been great working with our players,” Day said. “What’s stood out most is how quickly he’s built trust and respect. The guys are locked in when he talks.”
Ohio State’s defense is under pressure to return to championship-caliber form after uneven performances in recent years. With Patricia now part of the brain trust, the Buckeyes hope his expertise will give them the edge they need, especially against high-octane Big Ten offenses and perennial playoff foes.
As fall camp approaches, optimism is growing in Columbus. If early player reviews are any indication, Matt Patricia’s second act — this time in college football — may be just what the Buckeyes needed.
