West Virginia University (WVU) Police swiftly apprehended a suspect following a reported stabbing near the downtown campus area on Friday, May 2, 2025.
Incident Details
At approximately 10:30 p.m., officers responded to a call about a stabbing at a private residence located at 565 Price Street, just off the main campus. The altercation involved two WVU students. The victim sustained a non-life-threatening knife wound to the leg and was promptly treated at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.
The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Kaden James Vinar from Champlin, Minnesota, was arrested at the scene and charged with felony malicious wounding. He was arraigned in Monongalia County Magistrate Court on Saturday, May 3.
Investigation and Campus Safety
According to WVU Police Chief Sherry St. Clair, the incident was not random. The suspect and the victim were acquainted, and the victim had been visiting Vinar’s residence at the time of the altercation. Chief St. Clair commended the officers for their prompt response, stating, “The quick response from our officers to locate the suspect and take him into custody ensured this remained an isolated incident. At no point was there a threat to campus.”
In light of the incident, WVU Police emphasized the importance of conflict resolution and the availability of support services.
