OU’s right-handed pitcher releases statement on absence from Sooners

Sophia Bordi, a highly regarded right-handed pitcher from New Jersey, has made a significant impact on the Oklahoma Sooners softball program.

Originally slated to join the team in 2026, Bordi accelerated her academic timeline, graduating early from Haddon Heights High School and enrolling at the University of Oklahoma in the spring of 2025. This decision was influenced by her desire to immerse herself in the collegiate environment and gain early experience with the Sooners.

Upon her arrival, Bordi expressed her commitment to learning and adapting to the team’s dynamics. She emphasized the importance of understanding the team’s culture and systems, stating, “I’m here to listen and learn.” Her approach reflects a maturity beyond her years and a dedication to contributing meaningfully to the team’s success.

Head Coach Patty Gasso has praised Bordi’s work ethic and potential. While the initial plan was for Bordi to redshirt during the 2025 season, Gasso highlighted the value of Bordi’s early enrollment, noting that it would provide her with a head start in her development. Gasso remarked, “She is quite behind, and I think she knows that. When you miss a complete fall, you’re jumping into a team that already has the system down.”

Bordi’s early enrollment also positions her to be a leader for the incoming class of 2026. By gaining experience and understanding the program’s expectations, she can offer guidance and mentorship to her future teammates. This foresight demonstrates her leadership qualities and commitment to the program’s long-term success.
