In a monumental move that unites one of college football’s most legendary figures with his alma mater, the University of Tennessee has officially named NFL Hall of Famer Peyton Manning as the new Managing Director of its Athletic Department. The appointment signals a bold new era for Volunteers athletics, blending deep tradition with a forward-thinking vision for the future.

Manning, who quarterbacked the Volunteers from 1994 to 1997, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in college and professional football history. His connection to Tennessee runs deep—not only as a record-setting player, but also as a passionate ambassador for the university over the past two decades.

In his new role, Manning will oversee strategic planning, fundraising, and departmental development across all sports programs. His leadership is expected to bolster Tennessee’s position in the rapidly evolving landscape of collegiate athletics, particularly amid major changes involving NIL regulations, conference realignments, and athlete advocacy.

“This is more than a professional opportunity—it’s a personal calling,” said Manning in a statement released by the university. “The University of Tennessee shaped who I am. I’m honored to now help shape its future and lead a program that means the world to me and my family.”

University Chancellor Donde Plowman praised the hire, calling Manning a “transformational figure whose leadership, integrity, and vision align perfectly with the university’s values.” Athletic Director Danny White added, “Peyton’s presence will elevate our entire department—from student-athletes to administration to our passionate fan base.”

While Manning has long been involved in philanthropic and alumni efforts at Tennessee, this marks his first official administrative role in collegiate athletics. His business acumen, national stature, and deep understanding of both football and leadership are expected to make an immediate impact.

As the Vols look ahead to the 2025 season and beyond, the Manning era in Knoxville isn’t just continuing—it’s expanding into powerful new territory.
