Atlanta Braves’ star outfielder confirmed to be out for the rest of the season

Atlanta Braves’ star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. has been confirmed to miss the remainder of the 2024 MLB season due to a torn ACL in his left knee.

The injury occurred on May 26 during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates when Acuña attempted to steal third base and his knee buckled. An MRI revealed the complete ACL tear, necessitating surgery and sidelining him for the rest of the season.

This marks the second time Acuña has suffered such an injury; he previously tore his right ACL in 2021, a season in which the Braves went on to win the World Series without him. Despite the setback, Acuña has been a pivotal figure for Atlanta, earning the 2023 National League MVP award after a remarkable season with a .337 batting average, 41 home runs, 106 RBIs, and 73 stolen bases.

Acuña’s absence is a significant blow to the Braves, who have already faced challenges this season. Ace pitcher Spencer Strider is also out for the year after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April . Additionally, third baseman Austin Riley was placed on the injured list due to a broken right hand, further depleting the team’s roster.

In response to these injuries, the Braves have made several roster adjustments. They signed infielder Gio Urshela to replace Riley and placed pitcher A.J. Minter on the 60-day injured list after he underwent hip surgery . Despite these challenges, Atlanta remains competitive, holding a 30–20 record and contending for a playoff spot.

The Braves’ resilience will be tested as they navigate the remainder of the season without two of their key players. The team’s pitching staff, led by Chris Sale, has been a bright spot, but the offense will need to step up in Acuña’s absence to maintain their postseason aspirations.
