Derby county agree deal to sign former EPL striker

Derby County have secured the signing of experienced striker Dwight Gayle on a short-term contract until the end of the 2023/24 Sky Bet League One season.

The 34-year-old forward, a free agent after leaving Stoke City earlier this year, brings a wealth of experience to the Rams’ promotion campaign.

Gayle’s career boasts impressive statistics, with 147 goals in 389 club appearances, including notable spells at Newcastle United, West Bromwich Albion, and Crystal Palace. His most prolific season came during the 2018/19 campaign with West Brom, where he scored 24 goals in 41 appearances. After a tenure at Stoke City, Gayle’s contract was mutually terminated in February 2024, making him available for Derby’s push for promotion.

Derby County, currently second in League One, have been in pursuit of a striker following the long-term injury to leading scorer James Collins. Manager Paul Warne expressed the club’s determination to bolster the squad, stating, “We are doing everything we can to get him in the building.”

Gayle’s arrival adds depth to Derby’s attacking options, providing a seasoned goal scorer to complement the team’s promotion ambitions. His experience and proven track record are expected to be invaluable assets as the Rams aim to secure a return to the Championship.

With the signing of Dwight Gayle, Derby County have strengthened their squad for the remainder of the season, enhancing their prospects in the competitive League One promotion race.
